Renault Clio radiocode
The Renault Clio has been the best-selling car in the Netherlands for decades and has a long history of built-in radio installations. From the Clio II (1998) onwards, original Renault radios use the PRE-code security system: as soon as the battery is disconnected, the radio locks and requests a four-digit unlock code. The Clio III and IV use the Update List and Media Nav systems respectively, with the PRE-code visible on a small sticker behind the glove compartment flap or on the radio itself after removal. With the correct PRE-code, we calculate your personal radio code in seconds.
Generations and radio systems
| Generation | Build years | Radio system |
|---|---|---|
| Clio II | 1998–2005 | Tuner List / Update List |
| Clio III | 2005–2012 | Update List |
| Clio IV | 2012–2019 | Update List / Media Nav |
Where do I find the PRE code in my Clio?
On the Renault Clio II and III, you will find the PRE-code on a white or silver-grey sticker behind the glove compartment. Open the compartment fully and look at the back — the code consists of letters and numbers (e.g. P123456AB). On the Clio IV, the PRE-code is sometimes also on a sticker on the back of the radio. To remove the radio: insert two radio extraction tools (DIN keys) into the four holes around the radio front. Pull gently forward. The sticker on the back shows the PRE-code and serial number.
Useful tips for the Clio
- Always check the glove compartment before removing the radio — on the Clio, the sticker is there in 9 out of 10 cars.
- The Clio IV with Media Nav sometimes no longer requires a separate PRE-code; the radio pairs via VIN. Check whether your screen requests a code.
- Store the radio code in a safe place after receiving it — write it on a note in the vehicle registration or save it on your phone.
- After a new battery or battery reset, you can always use the same code again. The code never changes for your specific radio.

Frequently asked questions about the Clio radio code
The Renault Clio II (1998–2005), Clio III (2005–2012) and Clio IV (2012–2019) with Update List or Media Nav radio use the PRE-code system. The oldest Clio I models have a Blaupunkt radio without a PRE-code.
This appears when you have entered the wrong code multiple times. After three incorrect attempts, the radio locks itself for 1 hour. Leave the car running or the ignition key in the "ON" position until the wait time has passed, then you can enter a code again.
Turn on the ignition and wait until the radio shows "CODE" or "—- —-". Use the preset buttons (1-4) to enter each digit. On the Update List radio, the numbers are per button: button 1 selects the first number, arrow buttons adjust the value. Confirm with the MODE or OK button.
No, the PRE-code is necessary to calculate the unique radio code. Without the PRE-code, there is no safe and reliable way to determine the correct code. The radio serial number alone is insufficient.
If the sticker is damaged or unreadable, remove the radio using DIN extraction keys. On the back of the radio there is also a sticker with the PRE-code and serial number. Alternatively, a Renault dealer can read the PRE-code via diagnostic software.
